Summer Program Highlights and Reflections

 

Students participated in the following field trips and special events:

  • Olympics – An afternoon of academic and athletic team building activities for students where competitive events promoted team unity and Breakthrough spirit.
  • Career Day – Students visited community professionals in a wide variety of (doctors, lawyers, dolphin trainers, etc.) Students write resumes and cover letters for hosts in advance.
  • College Day – A full-day scavenger hunt took students on an adventure through the University of Miami campus.
  • Breaking Through To High School – Eighth grade students learned about many opportunities available for high school.
  • ArtSplosion – Seventh grade students toured local galleries in Miami’s Design District to be inspired, create art and experience the artistic culture of Miami!
  • Culture Week and Talent Show – Activities centered on the celebration of diversity and cultural exchange culminating in a showcase for students to celebrate their talents
  • Celebration – Celebration is the culminating event of the summer that highlights academics and co-curricular activities. Displays feature student work and family and friends share in this finale to the summer.

Breakthrough Miami had another successful summer by operating two sites at Ransom Everglades Middle School and F.S. Tucker Elementary School serving 173 students and 57 teaching interns.

High school teachers were from local schools including Ransom Everglades School, Coral Reef Senior High School, Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, Miami Northwestern Senior High and The Academy of Arts and Minds. College teachers hailed from the University of Miami as well as colleges and universities across the country, including Harvard University, Brown University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Duke University, University of Texas at Austin, Georgetown University, Marquette University, and Washington University in St. Louis.

Breakthrough Miami again offered a rigorous academic curriculum in five subject areas: English, Math, Science, Social Studies and Foreign Language. Some courses offered included Exploring the Brain, Planetary Science, Chemical Reactions, Racial Crisis and American Trials, Election 2008, and The History of Ancient Egypt.
Students also participated in activities offered through the Co-Curricular component of the summer program:

  • All School Meeting (ASM) – Held daily to celebrate student accomplishments, reinforce program expectations and prepare for upcoming events.
  • Mini-courses – Designed around interests, talents and hobbies of summer teachers, non-academic electives included fashion design, tap dancing, improv acting, hip-hop dance, cross- stitching, and photography.
  • After-Lunch Activities (ALA) – Students chose sports, board games, arts and crafts, dance workshops and computer classes.
  • Field Trips and Special Events.
