As Breakthrough Miami looks toward expanding its services to thousands of students in Miami-Dade, it is proud to continue its partnership with Ransom Everglades (RE) School and hopes to remain rooted in the tradition of excellence and service the school exemplifies. It is with extreme gratitude we want to honor this most important, valuable partner.
Two RE alumni, John Flickinger and Doug Weiser, founded Breakthrough Miami in 1991 in partnership with Ransom Everglades School. Since then the program has grown and thrived under the leadership and support of the school. “This program would not be where it is today without the incredible support of the RE school community,” says John Flickinger, BTM Executive Director.
The school, established in 1903 by Paul C. Ransom, is one of the oldest, most respected institutions in South Florida. “Ransom Everglades is a unique educational institution, one that has stood the test of time and has had a great impact on the city of Miami as a representation of innovation and excellence in education,” says Ellen Moceri, current Head of Ransom Everglades. “Throughout its long history, RE has remained true to its mission of training a leadership class to give more to their communities than they take from them.”
It is this tradition of educational excellence, leadership and service that has helped define and guide the Breakthrough Miami program over the years, becoming the concrete expression of RE’s commitment to serving the greater Miami community. Each year the school dedicates nearly $100,000 in in-kind support to the program. Additionally, the entire school community has become involved either directly or indirectly in supporting Breakthrough students and families.
In 2004 Ransom Everglades School was recognized for this exceptional support by the National Association of Independent Schools when it was awarded the NAIS Leading Edge Award for community service. The school was recognized again in 2006 when the Head of School received the Klingenstein Leadership Award. RE also was the only independent school in Florida to receive a 21st Century Community Learning Centers Award of more than $2 million to support the expansion of Breakthrough Miami in 2002.
